A Guide to Your first Week of Vaping

New to the vaping world? Here’s how to successfully navigate your first week as a vape user.

Are you new to the world of vaping? Have you always wanted to try it but are you scared to look foolish because you don’t know what you are doing? You shouldn’t let that put you off. Read the following guide instead and allow us to help you navigate the tricks of the vaping trade. Vaping might not be for everyone but it could be for you. Here’s all you need to know about trying it for the first time.

Getting into the Right Mindset

When you first start vaping, you almost feel like you are doing something you shouldn’t be doing. It’s a little bad, right? But it doesn’t have to be. Did you know, for example, that you can vape with 0% nicotine e-liquids? This is the ideal solution for those that want a vaping experience without the risks of becoming addicted to it.

It’s also important that you understand vaping isn’t as dangerous as you think it is. There are some wonderful videos about the comparison between smoking and vaping. In one experiment, scientists put cotton wool balls into a vacuum chamber with two holes in it. The first hole was the entrance, where one chamber had cigarettes placed for a full month and the other chamber used a vaping device. The other hole was the ‘exhale tube’ where the spent smoke/vapour released. This experiment shows you in a very visual way how much damage smoking does to your lungs, throat, and mouth. It also shows you in no uncertain terms, that vaping is nowhere near as hazardous… even after a full month of use. You can watch the experiment here and we highly recommend you do so if you still feel wary about vaping.

There is a great page that can help with setting your mindset over at https://yorkshirecancerresearch.org.uk/vaping-demystified. They point out some of the fallacies associated with vape use. Since they are a Cancer Research Charity, you can trust their opinions on the safety of vaping by comparison to the safety of smoking cigarettes. Getting it into your head that you are not doing anything wrong when you vape is the first step to successfully using a vape device.

One final item on the agenda for proving vaping isn’t as bad as you were taught, comes from the UK government itself. Their research shows vaping is up to 95% less harmful than cigarettes. You can trust the government, trust the cancer research charity, or trust the video. Either way, vaping isn’t as harmful as you have been led to believe.

Knowing What to Expect

There are scare stories in the media about the potential harm of e-cigarettes. However, those proven harmful are in other countries. Here in the UK, the government closely regulates the sale of tobacco products and e-cigarettes fall into this regulation. The chemicals that create harmful effects have been banned in the UK. This is not true of America. You should therefore expect to have a safe vaping experience when you choose to start, no matter which device you choose.

You should also consider what to expect in terms of your own wellbeing. Vaping might make you cough. If it makes you nauseous, you need to downgrade the nicotine strength. You can expect not to enjoy every flavour of vape juice, either. If you are switching to vaping from cigarette smoking, then you should think about sticking to tobacco flavour at first. If not, the world is your oyster.

Essential Supplies for Your First Week of Vaping

To begin vaping, there are some pieces of equipment you will need. These include:

  • A vape device
  • The accoutrements, including a charger or spare coils.
  • Vape juice/e-liquid

If you have these basics, you can start vaping straight away. The best way to get this equipment is to buy a vape kit. Vape kits tend to include all the items you need to begin. Although we supply excellent high-end kits like the Geekvape Aegis Legend 2, we recommend that you start on something with a little less power. This helps you avoid spending lots of money if it turns out you don’t enjoy it.

Some of the best vape kits for starters in their first week include:

  1. The Uwell Caliburn A2
  2. The Vaporesso GTX pod kit
  3. The Xros Mini Pod Kit (best for discreet vaping)
  4. The Geekvape Boost 2 Kit (which has everything for a great price)

Choosing the Right E-Liquid Strength

Just like there are different kits you can buy to start yourself off in vaping, there are also different e-liquid strengths. The UK government regulates the strengths of vape juices so that you cannot buy one stronger than 20mg. If you are a first time vape user, steer well clear of that sort of strength. 1 or 2 mg of nicotine in your vape device will be enough to give you the mild high of a nicotine buzz.

When you have vaped for long enough that you no longer feel that nicotine buzz, then it is time to increase the strength. Go up 1-2mg at a time.

Ex-Smokers

If you are an ex-smoker, you need something harder hitting than the 1-2mg of nicotine. If you smoked less than 10 cigarettes per day, opt for 8-10mg of nicotine strength in your vape juice. If you smoked 10-20 cigs a day, up that to 10-15mg of nicotine strength. If you smoked more than 20 per day, start at 15mg of nicotine and increase to 20mg if you need to.

What E-Liquid Should You Buy?

Check out these vape juices that we currently have to give you some inspiration as to the type of e-liquid that you should buy. There are a million choices in vape juice nowadays. As we mentioned above, try the tobacco flavour if you are an ex-smoker. If you are a new vape user who never smoked, you can choose any flavour you like. Many vape users decide on sweet, desert, or candy based flavours. This is because vaping allows them to enjoy sweet treats without any of the calories.

Dealing With Cigarette Cravings

If you decide to quit smoking using a vape device, doing a little light reading beforehand will make things simpler for you. Vaping won’t take away every cigarette craving that you have, but it will make those cravings far less intense. You can combine vaping with other items, too. Look at the pros and cons of nicotine patches, gum, and vaping, if you are unsure.

You should follow the NHS advice for dealing with nicotine cravings. Your doctor or your local pharmacist should help. It is worth mentioning that the NHS are currently trialling vape devices on prescription in place of NRT because it is proving effective as a stopping smoking aid.

Be Informed About Vaping

Informing yourself about vaping will help you to combat negative comments or discussions. There is a myth that because vaping hasn’t been around for a hundred years yet, that we don’t know what it will do to our bodies long term. Scientists have studied this and, as yet, as long as you avoid those chemicals found in American e-cigarettes, then you should have no problem long term. Countless experiments are proving this, every day. Do not let people tell you that you shouldn’t switch to a vape device from smoking because “you don’t know if it’s less harmful.” It is less harmful. There are countless studies that confirm this, not least the driving study from the Royal College of Physicians upon which the UK gov bases its actions.

Know Where You Can Vape

The last thing you need to do to prepare yourself for your first week as a vape device user, is to learn about where you can and cannot vape. Vape devices are just like cigarettes in this instance. Just because they smell better and do not give you passive effects of vaping, doesn’t mean that it doesn’t produce massive amounts of vapour which could annoy others.

You should not vape when you are driving, nor should you use your vape inside any public buildings. This means no vaping indoors when you are at the bar or shopping. You should remove yourself to any smoking area nearby before you attempt to vape. You can use your vape in public places, as long as you are outdoors. Just like the smoking laws, you must be in an area that is open air. You can vape in a shelter with no sides, since this is open enough. You cannot vape on trains or buses.

Your workplace has a designated smoking area, you can vape there.
